Mewtwo fighting himself tooth and nail to not go off on Jen for doubting his prowess. Kinda scary. Guy's got major pride issues.

Also, I can clearly see N getting that "rather talk about anything else" look.

Shotgun Chuck: I dunno, I get the feeling Mewtwo's being really emphatic here because he wants to reassure her for her own sake, not his. I found it very touching :3

Lmao, OMG I'm dying XD.

Guys, change the word bubble in the last panel with your mind and imagine it Says "Mewtwo, we need to talk"

Yep, that'd the correct emotional response to that question alright loololol!

Awwe! Mewtwo, let her hug you! She is clearly shaken! Still. So happy to see most of the gang back together!

This is incredibly rude and appoliges in advance. Doesn't pumkaboo evolve into gorgiest when traded?? If you know what I mean ^u^

  Jen used Tackle

This series has done a LOT to help me understand Mewtwo a little better. I have to admit, I never really liked him-- he always came across as being stuck up and superior, especially given how he was characterized in literally every canonical appearance ever. But it's here where we see that he KNOWS that's not a good way to go through life for ANYONE, and while he still has problems with overconfidence and all-consuming pride, he's genuinely TRYING to be better. That struggle for him is so expertly shown in Victory Fire, and I'm so glad that the story is still going strong.

Also Jen is adorable and I want a stuffed Audino now.

Thank you for everything you've done so far!

@Phoebeburgh

One of my favorite Mewtwo-related comments was during the Buried Relic run when someone on DA said "...he doesn't seem like an insanely overpowered character. He is, I mean just look at this page of course he is, but it never feels like that when it counts..."

It's a challenge taking someone as innately powerful as Mewtwo and making him interesting, so I'm always pleased to hear that people think I've been managing it.

Aww, that's so sweet! Even Wes looks touched by this!

@sulfurbunny:

Well, you seem to have figured out the secret to writing for grossly overpowered characters: Put them in story situations where their gross overpowerness doesn't solve their problems.

The audience KNOWS that Mewtwo can beat basically anything short of a shadow legendary. (We even got to see some this comic, where he casually blew up the Gengar twins in passing, who had given Jen/Gengar/Kecleon some trouble.) It's one of Mewtwo's defining traits - he's a super-powerful psychic and can basically win any normal fight automatically.

Too bad for him (but great fun for the audience!) that his recent problems haven't been normal fights, and have instead been things that he can't solve automatically! Including (but not limited to):
* Figuring out how Darkrai and Jen fit together
* Figuring out Victini's plan before it's too late
* Figuring out how to fix the world after Victini broke it
* Figuring out who or what Hoopa is, and what it wants
* General trust issues

So yeah. I think you're managing to make him interesting just fine. :D

  Just realized, Wes might be good for Gengar.

So I gave a comment on an earlier comment about how I feel like Gengar is still broken, as he is afraid to delve into his more prankster/mischievous nature, basically afraid of himself.

Now here comes Wes..he's pretty comfortable with himself, he's not a completely good guy..but he isn't evil either. He's doing what is right in the end, but he's more than willing to take measures that others might balk at.

This strikes me as something that Gengar might need to see..someone who isn't losing their humanity..someone who isn't becoming everyone hates him bad. But still is more than happy to engage in such behaviors, to be more dark in their dealings. Dunno if things could go that way, but it's nice to think of Wes and Gengar getting along, and Gengar being more comfortable with himself.

Besides the pokemon he wronged having shown something of treating him with a touch of forgiveness have probably helped some already.

This will be in the top five most interesting conversations ever had.

"Don't need to worry about you", Mewtwo, you liar, I was FRANTIC for the entire month of June! But Jen, don't cry, he's back and mostly okay. Now give Boss Kitty another hug from me - guy doesn't get enough hugs - and then hug Lopunny, she looks like she was expecting one.

(In all seriousness, though, don't hug people if they're uncomfortable with it, even if they desperately need a hug, like Mewtwo here.)

@Shotgun Chuck: Yeah, I have to agree with @doip doip: here, Mewtwo's expression and body language and words seem more to me like someone who wants to make the eleven-year-old who's sobbing over him feel better.

@Bwob: I have nothing to add to your comment, but wanted to say that I agree! It's a difficult skill to master, making OP characters interesting, not plot-breaking, and still show them being powerful, so @sulfurbunny: I think you do a good job too. :)

@Junion: I think you're right. Ooh, now imagine Gengar and Wes as a slightly-criminal crime-fighting duo - it'd be awesome!

I can see it now.
"...Jen. This Gourgeist is your sister, Lovrina."
And then N and Jen would shout out in shock for two different reasons.

Also, from the angle seen in the last panel, it looks like even Lovrina's stomach face thing is frowning...
Or is it more than an illusion...?

DID BUTTERFREE JUST ASSUME LOVRINA'S GENDER!??!!!??!??!??!

Man, poor Mewtwo and his issues.

Either way, things are about to come to head. Jen's sister, as Ricky Ricardo so eloquently put it, "LUCY! You have some splaing to do!"

I just remembered, I wonder if N will ask Mewtwo how the device worked out.
