Haha, Gengar and Butterfree meeting up again after all this time - it's like a beautiful 90s sitcom!

- He's a jaded ex-conman, just trying to go straight and do the right thing for once.
- He's an idealistic young up-and-comer, who was one of the conman's first marks.

... And now they're roommates! Wacky hijinks ahoy!

Seriously though, this is great. Is it weird that I'm looking forward to the Butterfree/Gengar conversations (with commentary by Jen!) almost as much as I was the talk with Gardevoir?

Art-wise, I find myself wondering if Alakazam's face is as annoying to draw as it sounded like MewTwo's was?

No, Mewtwo is a special kind of hell to draw. Though I'm having to alter Alakazam's design a bit to make him look less, uh, someone on DA said "...He looks more of a veteran explorer, more than a grumpy hunchback old man."

I'm only FINALLY starting to get a handle on Mewtwo NOW, and I internally cringe whenever I have to go back to any pre-Buried-Relic pages with M2 content.

Was there a prequel comic series? Anyone have the link?

I wonder what the actual town looks like.

  Oh good!

Alakzam (the mortal enemy's of gengars) is nice to gengar! What a small world...

@SillyMe - There isn't a prequel comic series, but a lot of the characters in this comic were in various pokemon video games, and have a bit of backstory there. (N and Wes, for example, are straight out of Pokemon Black/White and Colosseum, respectively.)

Specifically, Gengar is originally from the game "Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red/Blue Rescue Team" and played a large role in it. Early on, he lured Caterpie into the woods, (because Metapod had gone missing) and was planning to force Caterpie to join his team, before being stopped by the player. (Gengar's team was "Team Meanines", made up of Gengar, Medicham and Ekans - all of whom we've seen in this comic now.)

Since Pokemon Square was the main hub-town in the game, a lot of the characters we're meeting here in the comic have some history with Gengar.

The meteor crisis that Alakazam mentions is the end of PMD: Red/Blue rescue team. By that point, Gengar was starting to reform, and helped Alakazam and Xatu make the teleport gem needed by the player to enter the final dungeon. (Also he saved the player from an explosion by pulling them through the spirit world - basically what he did with Darkrai in this comic.)

Soo...Blue/Red Rescue Team going to appear? It still feels kind of weird that the team from the first game haven't been mentioned at all. Did they die or did they just never exist in this comic? I mean, I could understand the T/D/Sky team not making an appearance, since that doesn't really affect the story going forward, but the Red/Blue rescue protagonist team kind of falls specifically into Gengar's own personal backstory. Without them, Gardevoir wouldn't even be walking around at all right now.

The teams from the games have definitely been mentioned a few times. There are probably more places I'm forgetting, but off the top of my head:

Comic 153: Gengar says "some people" helped him save Gardevoir. That's the players team from Red/Blue Rescue Team.

Comic 218: Medicham mentions the time Gengar tried to blame the player for being human cursed by Ninetales. ("You thought it was that kid - team what's-their-name?")

Comic 421: Medicham says she's known three humans in three regions, all who were team leaders. She's talking about the player in Red/Blue, the player in Time/Darkness/Sky, and Gengar.

So they definitely come up sometimes, but I doubt we'll ever actually see them on-screen. Aside from the obvious problem of "what species are they, even?", this story doesn't seem to really be about them. This seems more like Gengar and Jen's story. The original rescue teams are just background characters.

I admire Gengar's humility here. He has changed and wants to atone so even when he does good he still won't take credit not till he feels he has earned forgiveness for the harm and damage he cause.

Gengar has become Nobel.

@Bwob @sulfurbunny once said that the exact identities of the PMD R/BRT protagonists will never be mentioned in-series specifically because it's supposed to be whatever your team was in those games. In my case, Charizard and Blastoise. I'm a simple man. I also was young at the time, and didn't realize how hard the first-gen starters got goofed over in terms of FE endgame stats, or how infuriatingly OP they made grass starters from the same perspective (yes, I'm typeist against grass and towards fire).

My team was Psyduck + Cyndaquil. I still say Psyduck is the best PMD starter that was, is or ever will be.

Escort mission in a sandstorming level? Oh look I have Cloud Nine.
Golem wants to explode in Magma Cavern? Oh look I have Damp.
And then link up disable/screech/fury swipes and enjoy killing every boss within three turns.

(everyone keeps asking for this... oh man imagine the reaction if I introduced the world-famous PMD1 Protag team leader and he's a psyduck...)

I dunno, if he evolved into a Golduck that would make him boss in my book, I think Golduck is horribly underappreciated. By the way, my team was Machop and Charmander, and the only reason I remember is because it took me almost an hour to get that frickin Machop.

I like Butterfree already.

Yay, the whole team's gonna meet up! The other two humans are gonna meet the first two!

Butterfree's a cool little dude.

Oh, Gengar. I'll confess to not knowing everything you did, but as far as I can see, the good is outweighing the bad. You just have to learn to accept it.

Alakazam is one of those characters whose voice I can actually hear in my head as I'm reading. I mean, I hear the characters' voices reasonably distinctly from each other, but usually when I'm reading, voices just kind of sound like my own, putting on different pitches and accents. Alakazam's, though, actually sounds like somebody else - an old but not frail man with a fairly deep, slightly hoarse voice and a slight Received Pronunciation accent. Does anybody else know what I'm talking about, or am I alone in this phenomenon?

@Bwob: I want that to be an actual sitcom. It sounds like it would be awesome in the right hands.

@sulfurbunny: AAGH DRAWING MEWTWO *gnaws on own hands* It's weird, 'cause he doesn't look like he'd be hard to draw, the shapes seem simple enough, but then you get started and it's just instantly WRONG. *grinds teeth*

However, I thought your Mewtwo pre-Buried-Relic was pretty good, and I'm picky about how Mewtwo is drawn - I can't even look at a picture of him if it doesn't look right. One of the reasons I never used to draw as a kid :P

(Also, re: Psyduck: DO EET)

I suppose I'm in the same camp on wishing the Red & Blue team would appear, but oh well. One way you could handle it is - put Gengar in front of their team base (yeah, lets not make it look like a Psyduck shaped hut - oh god no!), and throw a few word bubbles up that contain meaningful dialogue from the game or something, maybe a conversation he had with them at some point and the word bubbles are just memories of what they said to him, and maybe just have him say "thanks to you guys, I don't have to act like a jerk anymore? - and Butterfree could mention that last he'd heard of them, they were in some faraway place called "Post Town" (Gates to Infinity reference XD) since that oughta do it!

Guess I should mention who I picked in Rescue Team.

Red: Mudkip (player), Treecko (partner -- a nod to Groyvle from Explorers)

Blue: Bulbasaur (player), Squirtle (partner - nod to my player character from Explorers of Sky)

EDIT - If anyone wants to know other PMD games:
Sky: Squirtle (Player), Eevee (Partner)
Super Mystery Dungeon: Tepig (Player), Treecko (Partner - nod to Grovyle from Explorers)
