Just a wild guess, but maybe Mewtwo's attacks are ineffective because Victini is resistant to psychic-type moves

  That Face Though...

He just looks...it's not even horrified, it's not even stunned. He just looks so quietly sad, so accepting of what's going to happen. Aw, Mewtwo :(

But maybe he's flown off to find Darkrai and Gengar? Or maybe he's just trying to get away from here as fast as he can get.

To quote a certain Slowking from Pokemon 2000: "This looks bad."

So, random question that has nothing to do with the actual comic here but has been bothering me for a little while: How do Pokemon names work in this 'verse? I understand the legendaries just being referred to by their species name, since they're the only ones of their kind (except Lugia, maybe, if you're going by that one episode where Ash frees a mother Lugia and her baby), but what about regular Pokemon, like Gardevoir, Kecleon, Gengar (OK, he's not a regular Pokemon, but still), and Medicham? No one seems to think anything of calling them by species name, but Pokemon of the same species can't go around saying, "Hey Kecleon." "Hey Kecleon, what's up?" to each other, so how does that work?

OK, done with that very long question now. :P Still enjoying the comic!

And if you don't mind my responding to the comment you made that was meant for Goosygander: Oh, I was wondering where you were getting Darkrai's mouth from. I always sort of assumed that that big red thing around him was his mouth and he had the worst underbite known to man. ... It kind of looks that way. Anyhow, your mouth for him looks cool. Strange, but cool: he looks entirely different when we see it, somehow much more...well, "human", I guess is the word I'm searching for, but I should probably say, I dunno, "real".

Now I want you to make Mewtwo grin so we can see his cheetah teeth! (Although he's not going to be grinning any time soon in the next few comics...) And yeah, Mewtwo without teeth would just look absurd. Rayquaza is, to me, okay with just the fangs, seeing as he's a snake and snakes don't have any teeth, but Mewtwo's a cat, for goodness's sakes.

"And now I'll be on me way, before me comment gets any longer!"

@ReaderWriterNerd&Geek I think the names work basically as a last name kind of thing. like "Mr. Snotpockets" or "Ms. Nosynose" or something like that. They probably have names that go before the name of their type. In this case it would be like "Ms. Misty Shelgon" or something like that. The 'mons type names are like their family names.

At least that's what I think. Sulfurbunny probably might have it different. :V

Btw, thanks for the info on M's teeth: It's been bothering me. :3

We've seen Darkrai turn his head independently of the collar in animation, and you can also molest--err, pet him in 6th gen Pokemon Amie, so the red spiky collar is definitely not his mouth though you wouldn't be the first to assume that. For extra wtf, check out the manga adapt of the Darkrai movie where he's apparently capable of retracting his head into the collar like a freakin' turtle. What the hell Darkrai, you weirdo. Let's just pretend we didn't see that.

VF Darkrai mouth is a wild guess. I did do some theoretical anatomical studies for Darkrai early on in order to work out a feasible skull/ribcage/spine structure.

Mewtwo smiled on page 426 by the way. :3

Re names:
In the PMD games, NPC characters almost always refer to themselves by their species name. The only characters with true names are the Player and Partner. For the most part, the game designers simply avoided using multiples of a species: the only ones with speaking parts that I can think of are the two Kecleons (no relation to ours) who run the store in Time/Darkness/Sky, and they were basically Kecleon and Kecleon's Brother.

We don't use names in Victory Fire for several reasons. The major one is that the comic characters are nearly all game NPCs and we didn't want to rename them arbitrarily. Like Gamefreak/Chunsoft, we're doing our best to avoid putting multiples of the same species onscreen so we don't have to think about the name problem :D

On the other hand, we can get an idea of how it works in the wild by looking at the Houndoom pack from book 1. Each member of the pack knew who they were and knew who everyone else was, and as for Pokemon that weren't part of their group, it wasn't necessary to talk to them. In fact there was a deleted scene shortly after Houndoom met up with J/K/G where she asks him his name and he simply cannot grasp the concept. He is a Houndoom. That's all he needs or cares to know.

On the OTHER other hand, it is interesting to note that Mewtwo introduced himself to Wes not by saying "I am Mewtwo" as one might expect, but "My NAME is Mewtwo"...

If it's happening it's clearly possible.

@XD-MADNESS
The first thing I did with my Mewtwo in Amie was smack him to see what he'd do, and he gave me such a deathstare I'm scared to load him back into it. :(

@Goosygander: "Mr. Snotpockets" XD Thanks for the reply, even if it turns out that's not how it works here :) You made me laugh, at least. And you're welcome!

@sulfurbunny: OK, so what his face looks like canonically is a mystery. *spooky voice* Maybe he doesn't HAVE one...'nyway, him being able to pull his head into his collar sounds weird, and yet, weirdly right. And - you did anatomical studies? That's so cool! I'm really, really new to the world of drawing, so I keep running into people who are good at it and who have been doing it for years, and all I can think is, "You guys are so awesome!"

Yay, cheetah teeth! LOL. Now I'm wondering why carnivores tend to have that little gap between their canines and the rest of their teeth.

OK, I understand about the names now. :) Thank you for clearing that up! I can imagine the Houndoom knowing each other mainly by scent, like dogs, so names really wouldn't be an issue for them - which also explains why he hears his pup calling and he just yells, "Pup!" rather than, I don't know, "Charcoal!"

I can also see it working differently for different species of Pokemon, though...like the Houndoom, who are very different from humans and quite animalistic, wouldn't use names, but someone like Mewtwo, who is fairly close to being a human himself, would say that his name is Mewtwo. I don't know if you're imagining it that way, but that's just my interpretation :)

Also, perhaps you could give Mewtwo a cupcake and a nice ear scratch to make up for the smack? He was probably just thinking that humans were all alike. ;)

@42Meep: That's what I was thinking. XD

@sulfurbunny

He would probably give you a psychic-induced atomic wedgie if you did lol.

On a side-note: I'm kind of really excited about how trainer NPC-s are now going to be visible during all battles in Sun & Moon. Thats the one thing I'd always wanted them to add since X & Y. Hopefully they extend or expand on that feature in amie for S&M:)
