  Um...

What is a kanji?

posted by ScottishWolf on November 18th, 2014, 2:50 am

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanji

Simply put, it's a form of writing used in Japan. Gengar's from Johto, which is based of Japan, so it makes sense he wouldn't be able to read English (I'm guessing they can understand each other for the same reasons they can understand pokespeech in general).

Still that's... really clever. I hadn't considered the practical differences there might be between regions!

Also, Jen's face in panel 2 is perfect. She definitely seems to be getting more confident (and mischievous) over time.

Nice use of real world languages. I also love Jen's face.

Kanji? I though it was the XD face the 8l face upright, and the number 2... *shot for being a smart Alec*

Well, there's a good thing about them being pokemon, no language barrier. I never thought Gengar to be japanese while Jen is (possibly) American.

Quite interesting

Using the different writing systems as a plot device... Truly interesting

*reads comments* Huh. Never thought about any of this stuff before.

Jen in panel 2 is hilarious! she may be young, but these trips seem to be doing her some good. :)

The double O's almost look like an infinity sign. Hmm...

@ScottishWolf Kanji are Chinese characters carried over to Japan. Kudos to the author for knowing Japanese. (At least a little.)

@MiniDragonfly it makes sense, I mean Kanto is almost exacly the Kanto (east) section of Japan, ans Unova is New York.

EDIT: Tried to write Kanji in Kanji for an example. Turns out SJ hates Japan. :(

Aha! I was right about the dream being of his pre-pokemon home.... maybe...

Also, I have perfectly decoded the text's meaning.
XD is a face laughing at something that just happened, while the 8| face is just stunned by it.
The 2 refers to the fact that there are two faces.

  XD Comments

These comments make me wonder if anyone here, other than me, has ever played Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness...

  XD:Gale of Darkness

I agree Thungor, does anyone even know who Greevil is anymore? And I have an idea: The reason Darkrai went evil and that whole stuff with the Time Gears, was it because Team Cipher forced him to do it because he was XD002? And when Victini says that they're family, is he XD003? And if Kecleon was human, what language do you think he'd speak?

XD002

XD002... there is something UNPURE about this, beyond a SHADOW of a doubt...

posted by Tarri on November 19th, 2014, 2:38 pm

Wow. XD002? Im waiting for XD001 or some lugia or some gale of darkness character to show up...

Hahaha! @sulfurbunny I was wondering when you would put in a reference to Jen maybe being from a different region!(actually, I am doing a similar thing in my comic too...just plain awrsome.) XD lolz

Ummmmmm....

ポケモン?

EDIT: @Kinmotsu_no_Yoryuu - nope, guess SJ really doesn't like it. Well, it's a good thing I didn't go full weeb and name the Johto dream sequence pages in Japanese like I was tempted!

@Tarri - i c wut u did thar

Cute, Jen actually looked like Audino there with her ear like that. I know she's an Audino but still. Jen knows tae kwon do - wait, that's korean. Never mind

I named my orignal XD lugia "XD001"

as for this bit with the Kanji.... i cant even explain how amazed i am with how complex this story is its awesome...they can speak to each-other but not read the same writing... this comic has entered a new level of amazing storytelling... its the small things like this that i appreciate the most in a story.

and Jen in panel 2 and 6 ... thats quite the emotive contrast... i love it.

posted by Ziliath on November 21st, 2014, 7:53 am

@Ziliath - so did I! And he's in a premier ball :3c I think I got through about sixty premier balls trying to do that. I was tossing regular pokeballs away by the hundreds afterwards since you had to buy 10 regulars to get 1 premier.

Just so you guys know, the Orre region in the Colosseum games are said to be based of phoenix arazona. So, it's quite possible that she's from said region.

Yah, Unova isn't the first USA based region like people think.

Heh, I feel smart for knowing what Kanji is ^.^

posted by Guest on November 26th, 2014, 6:37 pm

I'm starting to wonder how old Gengar is.. he seem to mainly read Kanji and his dream had old fashioned Japanese style.. How log have he been there?
Jen, she seem to be maybe from europe or america or something.
But doesn't feel like he is.
